[ARCHIVED] Budget public hearing to be held next Tuesday evening

[North Wilkesboro, NC, May 29, 2020] At 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, the Town of North Wilkesboro will hold a public hearing on the proposed FY2020-2021 town budget. The hearing will be held virtually using the Zoom platform, meeting ID 879 4383 0805

Public comments will also be accepted at townhall@north-wilkesboro.com, or by calling 336-667-7129 ext. 3012 by 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2020.

In early May, Town Manager Wilson Hooper has released his recommended budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2020. The document can be viewed at the link below.

The budget contains no significant cuts to services, and maintains the Town’s property tax rate at $.52 per $100 of valuation.

The proposed budget is approximately 2% smaller than the current year budget, but almost 10% smaller than where the town expected to be prior to the start of the coronavirus crisis. The Town expects to see sustained dips in sales tax revenue and investment earnings.

The proposed budget does contain a recommended 2% increase in regular water/sewer rates, and an increase of $.09 to the wholesale water rate over each of the next two years. For an average in-town household, this amounts to about $1.15 more per month. The additional proceeds from this rate increase will be used to pay for a new elevated water tower, an upgrade to the town’s water treatment plant, and other significant capital improvements over the next few years.

Hooper warned the Commissioners that further action may be required in the coming months as the crisis unfolds.
