Mercury can be dangerous to humans and the environment. Recycling prevents the release of mercury into the environment. Fluorescent and other mercury-containing bulbs often break when thrown into a dumpster, trash can or compactor, or when they end up in a landfill or incinerator. The Town of North Wilkesboro started a mercury recycling program August 1, 2015. This will include the proper disposal of fluorescent bulbs as well as old thermostats.
Recyclable items include
Fluorescent bulbs, including compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs)
High intensity discharge (HID) bulbs, which include mercury vapor bulbs
Drop Off Point
There is a drop off point at the North Wilkesboro Town garage outside of the gate on Flint Hill Road that's accessible 24 hours, 7 days a week. The Town also runs a biweekly route collection.
If you have any fluorescent bulbs or thermostats to be picked up please call 336-667-3638, ext. 3302 and you will be put on the list for pick-up.
