[ARCHIVED] Annual Christmas Cheer Project Underway

This tradition originated during Johnny Walker’s tenure as Chief of Police between 1936-1953 and has been faithfully carried out since that time. Names of elderly and needy families living within North Wilkesboro town limits are collected in the Clerk’s Office by referrals and telephone calls and are reviewed to determine eligibility.

Funds for this project are solicited by the Mayor, Town Commissioners and media advertisements.  Contributions for this project are received from businesses and private citizens.  320 boxes are assembled by Town staff and will be delivered on Thursday, December 24th.  2020.

Recipients must be at home in order to receive a food box as the food boxes contain perishable items. The boxes contain around sixteen (17) food items such as: flour, sugar, coffee, potatoes, peanut butter, crackers, salt, corn meal, apples, oranges, soap, bread, milk, pinto beans, country ham, and chicken. Tyson Foods donates chicken, PET Dairy donates milk, Flowers Bakery donates bread, Goodnight Brothers will donate country ham, and Wilkes Ministry of Hope will donate peanut butter. Food items are purchased from local grocers who submit the low bid. The total cost of the project is approximately $8,500.

This is a very worthwhile project, as many families look forward to this Cheer Box for their Christmas meals and it touches all those involved with the true meaning of Christmas. For more information, contact Debra Pearson, Town Clerk at 667-7129, ext. 3001.

TOWN CREWS WILL BE OBSERVING SOCIAL DISTANCING AND OTHER SAFETY PRECAUTIONS ON THE DAY OF DELIVERY.
