[ARCHIVED] Utility disconnections for non-payment to resume; payment plan available

[North Wilkesboro, NC, October 13, 2020] – At their October 6, 2020 Regular Meeting, the North Wilkesboro Board of Commissioners approved an updated Utility Customer Service Policy. The updated policy ends the moratorium on disconnections that has been in place since March, and calls for disconnections for non-payment to resume. However, it also includes the creation of a Reasonable Payment Plan so that customers who have gotten behind on their payments can repay them over time.

The updated policy may be viewed here:

Customers with past due balances prior to October 6, 2020 may call Town Hall or visit the payment window at 832 Main St. to apply for the payment plan. North Carolina Executive Order no. 142 requires the payment plan to last for at least six months, but the town will consider requests for longer plans.

The Reasonable Payment Plan application, which includes terms and conditions, can be viewed here: https://www.north-wilkesboro.com/DocumentCenter/View/816/Utility-Payment-Plan-Contract-1062020

Customers who fail to make payments on past-due balances incurred after October 6, 2020 will be subject to the town’s normal practices, which include penalties and possible disconnection.

The statewide moratorium on utility disconnections ended July 29, 2020. The town extended its moratorium as an acknowledgement of the continued financial hardships some customers are experiencing during the pandemic. However, the financial losses the town experienced during the moratorium period were unsustainable, and the Board of Commissioners elected to resume disconnections as a collection tool.
