[ARCHIVED] Updated Board of Adjustment meeting information

August 21, 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UPDATED INFORMATION FOR AUGUST 26, 2020 BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT MEETING

Attendance cap revised to comply with social distancing guidelines

[NORTH WILKESBORO, NC, August 21, 2020] – The North Wilkesboro Board of Adjustment will meet on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at the Yadkin Valley Event Center to consider a conditional use permit request from the Catherine Barber Memorial Homeless Shelter, and a variance request from a homeowner on Coffey Ave.

A similar request from the Catherine Barber Homeless Shelter last summer drew large crowds to the Board of Adjustment hearing.

To accommodate the expected crowd while also complying with social distancing guidelines, the meeting was rescheduled from its original date and location of August 13, 2020 at the Stone Family Center for the Performing Arts.

The new venue, Yadkin Valley Event Center, provides more room and enhanced capacity for online viewing. However, social distancing standards require that the attendance be capped.

Last week the town advertised the attendance cap at 120 persons. After further discussion with Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro fire marshals, and utilizing the capacity formula created by the Office of State Fire Marshall, the attendance cap has been revised to 80 persons.

Twelve seats will be reserved for the Board of Adjustment members and town staff. Of the 68 remaining seats, 30 will be reserved for petitioners and related participants in the hearing and those who have “standing.” Persons with standing are aggrieved parties that would suffer special damages from the outcome of the matter such as neighboring property owners, or other parties with legal interest in the property.

This leaves 38 seats for the general public. These seats will be filled on a first-come-first served basis.

Residents without standing are strongly encouraged to view the meeting remotely via Zoom. The log-in details are included at the end of this release. Staff members will turn away viewers once the 38 seats are filled.

Persons who are able to attend in person will be required to wear masks.

Participants and persons with standing in the Coffey Ave. variance case will be asked to wait in a separate, reserved room for the prior matter to conclude. Staff members will be on hand to direct these participants to the reserved room.
