[ARCHIVED] Town of North Wilkesboro safe Fourth of July activities

[NORTH WILKESBORO, NC, June 30, 2020] – The Town of North Wilkesboro will celebrate Fourth of July differently this year, with events designed around social distancing. There won’t be any fireworks, but there will be other opportunities.

First, since July 4, 2020 falls on a Saturday, the Wilkes County Farmers Market will be open for business from 7:30 am – 12:00 pm. Vendor stalls are spaced far apart, and vendors have implemented other safety measures to protect their customers. North Wilkesboro residents are encouraged to start their holiday with crafts and fresh foods from the market.

Second, a number of downtown businesses will be open with holiday-themed decorations in their storefronts. American flags will be hanging from light posts, and patriotic music will be playing on 9th and C streets. After sunset, Town Hall will be decorated with red, white, and blue lights. Residents can stroll, shop, and social distance while enjoying displays of patriotism downtown.

Third, the towns of North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro will celebrate patriotism and public servants on the Wilkesboro Ave. bridge by flying the flag from our aerial fire trucks. Residents are invited to cruise by in their cars and salute the flag between the hours of 5:00 – 8:00 pm. It’ll be a miniature reverse parade where the truck is stationary and the viewers go by.

Finally, at 8:00 pm North Wilkesboro will hold its first virtual Fourth of July concert. Following an introduction by North Wilkesboro Mayor Robert Johnson, local artists Will Easter and Alex Key will perform on the Downtown North Wilkesboro YouTube page.

From Boone and Asheville to the Triad and Charlotte, Will Easter has become a staple of music venues and festivals throughout the Carolinas and Virginia. With a piece of every place woven into each song, his music has something for everyone, while paying homage to his Sauratown Mountains roots.

Alex Key is rising country singer and Nashville recording artist based out of western NC. He performs all over with his band under the title "Alex Key and The Locksmiths." Alex’s music sticks to the country genre with strong classic influence.

This collection of events are designed to be enjoyed from a safe social distance, or from the comfort and safety of your vehicle or home. Residents who participate in the Farmers Market or downtown stroll are reminded to wear masks.

The Mayor, Board of Commissioners, and staff of the Town of North Wilkesboro wish everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July.
