FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED IN NORTH CAROLINA

Governor Cooper signs executive order prohibiting mass gatherings and ordering the closure of K-12 public schools

[North Wilkesboro, NC, March 16, 2020] – Last Saturday North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper issued Executive Order No. 117 prohibiting mass gatherings and closing public schools for students.

This order applies to Wilkes County and all its municipalities.

Mass gatherings are defined as any event or convening that brings together more than one hundred (100) persons in a single room or single space at the same time. It includes parades, fairs, and festivals. Violations of this prohibition may be prosecuted as a Class 2 misdemeanor.

The public school closure begins March 16, 2020 and runs through March 30, 2020 unless extended. The executive order directs NC DHHS and NC State Board of Education to develop implement measures to provide for the health, nutrition, safety, and educational needs and well-being of children during the school closure period.

In addition to the closures ordered by the Governor, the Town of North Wilkesboro has implemented a number of service changes designed to limit the opportunities for person-to-person transmission of the virus. Those changes can be viewed by clicking on the link below.
