[ARCHIVED] Town's Lead for North Carolina (LFNC) Fellow starts August 2.

[NORTH WILKESBORO, NC, July 30, 2021] – Mecklenburg County native and recent Davidson College graduate Mary Elizabeth Campbell will join the Town of North Wilkesboro as a Lead for North Carolina Fellow.

The Lead for North Carolina (LFNC) program, managed by the University of North Carolina School of Government (SOG), connects recent college graduates interested in public service with local government agencies in need of additional staff capacity. The aim of the program is to strengthen public institutions, support local communities, and cultivate a new generation of public service leaders.

To help accomplish this aim, the SOG provides financial support for cities and towns with modest means. Municipalities in counties designated Tier 1 in the NC Department of Commerce County Distress Rankings, which includes Wilkes, have the cost of participation underwritten by the SOG.

“I’m thrilled to have Mary Elizabeth join our team,” said Town Manager Wilson Hooper. “She’s got a heck of a resume for someone her age. I’m glad she’s exploring a career in public service in general, but even more so that she’s doing it with us.”

Campbell is a 2021 graduate of Davidson College where she majored in Political Science and minored in Latin American Studies. She is a 2017 graduate of Myers Park High School in Charlotte.

During her time at Davidson, Campbell served as a teaching assistant for instruction in political science research methods. She wrote for The Davidsonian newspaper, and served as a press intern for a member of the US Congress. Campbell researched sustainable development practices for agricultural communities in Ecuador, and interned at Charlotte’s International House non-profit agency.

Campbell will join town staff August 2 after three weeks of graduate-level training at the SOG in July.
