[ARCHIVED] TOWN OF NORTH WILKESBORO TO CLOSE RECYCLING CENTER NEAR MEMORIAL PARK/ABC

[NORTH WILKESBORO, NC, MAY 17, 2021] – Due to high rates of waste stream contamination, on June 1 the Town of North Wilkesboro will close its recycling convenience center located behind the North Wilkesboro ABC store adjacent to Memorial Park. The decision to close the facility was made with input from the Board of Commissioners after numerous complaints from constituents about the cleanliness of the facility, and confirmed reports of regular trash being placed in the containers reserved for recyclables. Individuals were also using the facility to dump large furniture and appliances. Use of the facility for these prohibited purposes decreased the effectiveness of the recycling program, and increased the cost of disposal for North Wilkesboro taxpayers. The Town has entered into an agreement with Foothills Recycling to accept the recyclables of town residents during normal business hours at the Foothills’ property on Boone Trail.

Bi-weekly curbside collection will continue for town residents. North Wilkesboro residents who wish to lease an additional rollout container for recyclables may call Steve Shumate (336) 667-3638 ext 3302. The cost of an additional container lease is $50. All area residents are encouraged to use curbside collection for their ordinary refuse and recycling. Bulky items such as appliances, tires, and scrap metal can be disposed of at the Wilkes County Landfill, 9219 Elkin Hwy. Roaring River, NC.
