North Wilkesboro's Town Board consists of a Mayor and five Town Commissioners who identify community needs and commit Town resources to meet those needs within the limits of federal and state law. Each member serves a four-year term, with elections occurring every two years. Regular meetings are held on the first Tuesday and the fourth Thursday of each month at 5:30 PM.

This board is appointed by the Town Board and is primarily responsible for recommending policies, conducting special studies, updating the Comprehensive Plan, and reviewing rezoning and conditional use applications. There are currently seven members serving on the planning board; four in-town members and three ETJ representatives. This board is a "recommending board" whose decisions can be appealed by the Town Board.
This appeal board is responsible for:
a) Hearing variance cases,
b) Issuing conditional use permits, and
c) Interpreting decisions from Planning and Inspections staff.
The Zoning Board of Adjustment is composed of five members and two alternates. This board is a "quasi-judicial" board whose decisions can only be appealed to the Superior Court of Wilkes County.
