[ARCHIVED] PROHIBITION OF HEAVY TRUCKS ON GRID STREETS NOW IN EFFECT; RAMPED-UP TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT CONTINUES

A photo of the new sign installed on 6th St. near D St. is included. This action means that the prohibition on heavy trucks approved by the Board of Commissioners in February is now enforceable. North Wilkesboro Police Department (NWPD) officers are now permitted to stop trucks weighing 19,501 lbs (Class 6) and above from using grid streets to skirt around the state-designated truck route on 2nd St. NWPD will initially issue warnings to offenders. Citations, if issued, will carry a $50 fine plus court costs.

Also, NWPD continues enhanced traffic enforcement on grid streets during the morning and evening commuting periods. Patrols are focused on Finley Ave., 8th St., and 6th St., but all grid streets are being patrolled. NWPD will be on the lookout for motorists who speed, run or roll through stop signs, and cross double yellow lines. The speed limit throughout the grid is 25 MPH. Citations, if issued, will carry a $50 fine plus court costs. Proceeds from fines are appropriated, by order of the North Carolina Constitution, to the state’s public schools.

These actions were/are being taken to improve the safety and quality of life of North Wilkesboro residents who live along grid streets. Neighbor complaints about speeding and thru trucks were confirmed by traffic data collected by the town and NCDOT, and by the observations of town staff. These actions will be complemented in the coming months by a realignment of the 6th/Hinshaw/I St. intersection, and other physical enhancements under evaluation by town staff.
